(IANS) Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has singled out India as an Asian country that has “made the mistake of being too democratic” and compared it unfavourably with China’s authoritarian regime.

Mahathir said: “India, of course, will grow, but more slowly than China. It has the numbers but is not making use of them well.”

He identified China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and, “to a lesser extent”, India as the countries which would lead the Asian charge, New Straits Times said Tuesday.

Mahathir, who ruled Malaysia for over two decades, told a seminar on Asia and 21st century that people “do not understand the limits of democracy”.

“Democracy can be a hindrance to progress because you spend so much time politicking that you don’t have time to develop your country.

“In China, there’s not much politics. So, they can spend more time developing their country.”

He blamed the West for making democracy and freedom the cornerstone of progress.

It is the West’s focus on democracy, civil rights and individual liberties - attributes flaunted by Western governments - that Mahathir identified as being the reason behind “its economic flaccidity”.

“The British believe a lot in so-called freedom. Their workers must be allowed to go on strike all the time. So, they have the problem of being a very unproductive population.

“They must be free of everything. When you do that, productivity will drop. When productivity drops, you cannot compete.”

Talking about Asia, Mahathir ruled out a role for “strife-torn” West Asia.

“They are not going to make much progress, unfortunately. They are not going to contribute to the Asia of the 21st century. But it doesn’t matter because Asia is such a big place,” Mahathir said.

East Asia’s emerging economic dominance over the West is due to its productivity and strong work ethic, he said.

However, the former premier warned of the increasing trend among young Asians to ape Western culture.

“Today, there are places in Tokyo where you see young people with multi-coloured hair. They look like Red Indians. These are the young Japanese who have adopted Western values,” said the octogenarian who continues to draw crowds six years after he quit office.

“They want to be free and be able to change the place they work, hop from one place to another and take marijuana. This is what the Europeans do. This is progress for those young people.”

Katoon,

LKS was appointed adviser to China before they boomed; perhaps he gave them good advice. Sadly India did not or does not need your advice; I wonder why?

Perhaps it is because of your treatment of Indians in Msia, or is it your blatant racism, kaka?? No matter what you do, India does not need this it-piece has-been racist despot / dictators like you for sure.

Why, they may even tar & feather you in Kerala, try it and see kaka; make your senile statements in India and they will probably whack your racist ass with coconut lidi...

You are a fakir Malay. Even Msia does not want you, kaka.....Ask humNoo

Dr. Mahathir Mohammad ,
Democracy is good ,better even if it is perfect. It is corruption that hinders progress and advancement and not the freedom to choose . Because the people are corrupt and selfish, they choose the wrong people to run the country. And because they are selfish that leads to corruption, , they would not allow others to make changes. That is the truth and the truth will set every nation free.

Wow! Looks like the cleverest man ever born was born in Malaysia. This type of undigested
tripe is fodder for the dumb asses that don't know better. That's why he spouts off, eager fools
are always ready to swallow this shite. India is a democratic country, the feudalists are being
beaten back, their time is up. China is a one-party state, the Communist's are the latest
dynasty in a country which has only known tyranny and dynastic rule. The bloodshed in
Tiananmen Square reveals the depth of their cruelty and their eagerness to hold on to
power, whatever the wishes of the people will be. The one-party tyrannies of this world are
all continuing simply because of their unrestrained use of violence against any dissent.
The people that live there are slaves. The people of India will never exchange their hard won
freedom for the bogus promise of tyrants and their business stooges. They are poor but
that can be taken care of over time. It takes hard work and character to change what is worst
in any nation. Mahathir only knows the quick fixes of tyrants and tyranny. Thankfully he is just
a pipsqueak with a big mouth.I shudder to think what he would do if he had the power of say,
Hitler. Germany was also very well developed and disciplined. And of little use to the
human race.

It's true China has tight hold on their economics. But there are also many unethical businessman there. And they are known to have child labor producing counterfeit products, those children are uneducated, poor, and badly paid. Expected to work long hours, and given poor accommodations. (Of course, it also happens in India, Philippines and Indonesia, but China is perceived to have to cheapest labor as there are bigger population there) Think twice before you buy counterfeit products. And also food products, most of them have not gone through Quality control, and may not be safe for consumption)

The reason why India is making slower progress is that their people are not united. Unlike China, even though there are many different cultural regions and dialects. But at least everyone could speak Chinese, a language understood almost everywhere in China. This way, they people could communicate with other people better, and it makes ruling easier. India also have different culture and regions, but they speak different language. That makes communication more difficult and caused a lot of conflict.

That is how it used to be. But now the Indians are making progress already. It would become a fully developed country soon and the economics is booming and could possibly rival China. Did I mention they also produce the best doctors and surgeons?

What Tun Mahathir says is true. China progresses because of the Govt has tight control over its economy. Any investor who wants to invest has just to go to a Govt dept and has his documents processed fast. Wrong doers beware. In India an investor has to grease anybody and everybody to get his documents done. There is rampant corruption. Like in Selangor where it is alleged that one has to grease UMNO warloads (whatever that means). Democracy must be tempered with a hard fist, lest, everything will boil down to human greed where I am better than you attitude. I see nothing wrong in Tun Mahathir's opinion, please.

China is not a democracy. Opposition parties are banned. Its per capita income is similar to Angola. Yes you see all those grandiose buidlings in the big cities which is impressive but there is grinding poverty in the rural areas where 700 million of the population live.

In Mahathir's world, if the elite put on a good show and rob the nation, it is OK. The will and interests of the majority do not matter. They will be cruelly supressed if need be to maintain the rule of the elite. In short, Mahathir supports mafia rule.

You are far more qualified than Manmohan Singh or anyone else in India to restructure the country so that it can beat China. As the self-proclaimed world's top-most expert in democracy and economics, your "genius" and "decisive actions" are required by India. There is no one in India who can match your genius. Too much democracy. OMG, how can such words be uttered?

Oh, I forgot. Of course it is UMNO and Mamakutty in particular who killed off democracy in Malaysia. Natural for him to say such moronic words.

Democracy and transparency do not go hand in hand with corruption and abuse of power. Of course Mamakutty and UMNO will never allow full democracy to flower in Malaysia. They need to dip their hands in the till to line their bank accounts.

No, of course for Mamakutty and UMNO democracy will not do at all.

Toon Kutty is undermining his "old country". . .!

Dear Toon Kutty,

The thing is not the degree of democracy that hinders progress and development. . ., but the degree of "corruption". Please refer to the Corruption Perception Index table by Transperancy international and compare that with of the countries with highest/lowest Per Capita Income! I bet you will find the correlation there!

Again. . ., degree of "corruption" and not degree of "democracy" that determines a country's progress.

And you tell others they do not know about economics. . .?

(Note: In communist China, they would have shot corrupted leaders like you and your elk for enriching your/their families and cronies with the peoples' money and stealing the nations' wealth)

"...increasing trend among young Asians to ape Western culture."
What about our local youths of mat-rampits? Maybe mamathir should introduce this as a solution to 'multi-coloured hair red Indians looking" youth all over Japan.

Did mamakthir mentioned that 'corruption in government' is the single most contributing factor in hampering a country's progress? And also stiffening none Malays/Bumiputras from growing is also another major2 factor that Malaysia is not growing as it should?

well India had the problem we are having which was one party ruling for long time and business was handed to cronies who created monopolies and entry barriers. Imagine after 40 years they were still manufacturing a car made for the 1960s. can you see some similarities with malaysia.India was very progressive in the 1950s-1970s but slide behind others. the problem is not democratic system or too much democracy. It is corruption. Even after the Indians became smart and decide to go with 2 party system, the other party(parties) were also corrupt. India needs a strong anti corruption agency like those in Singapore, Hong Kong, NOT Malaysia type. Corruption is bad in India and action against corruption is not strong enough. but things are improving as the 2 party system and the changes in govt at state level is creating some positive development for India, also the media there is free and are now able to expose the politician and their cronies.

as for China, the leaders from Deng Xiaoping have taken a capitalist way to grow the country and they practise a 'democratic' system within the communist party. And the past and present govt stand against corruption is very clear, you can get executed for it regardless of who you are. Also there is lots of accountability by the present Chinese leaders and govt unlike in india or malaysia even if they are not elected by a democratic system. China prior to 1990s also had lots of issues and corruption and was not developed. what made the difference was leadership and changes in the communist system and adopting meritocracy in business. deng said he doesn't care what color of the cat as long as he catches mice. in India they care too much what family tree the cat belongs to and same as in Malaysia.

There are couple of Indian states that are ruled by communist party but yet they are unable to rule like China. Why? What India needs is a drive against corruption lead by an independent agency supported by leadership of the govt. It also needs an accountable govt and accountable leaders. they do not need to be a communist country. It should also allow competition which brings benefit to the locals.

India is progressing, it will take 10-15 years for parts of India to be ahead of malaysia. Catching China will be difficult unless China screws up.
