Zahid needs to be clear on Umno’s direction, says KJ

(FMT) – Umno MP Khairy Jamaluddin said the party’s leaders should be clear with the direction of the party and whether it wants to form a unity government with PAS and Pakatan Harapan parties.

“You said previously that we should fight the cruel Harapan government. Then you came out with a statement saying we were exploring opportunities via a JV (joint venture).

“He is leading the party, he has to be clear,” he said in response to party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s maiden policy speech last night at the 72nd Umno General Assembly at Putra World Trade Centre, here.

Zahid had said Umno was still open to working with any party, but would not sacrifice its principles.

Earlier this week, Zahid had said he was open to forming a unity government with any Harapan party.

Ties between Umno and PAS began thawing last year, with leaders from both parties sharing the same stage on several occasions.

Their relationship further strengthened after the May 9 polls, most notably in the Sungai Kandis and Seri Setia by-elections where they made way for each other to contest and supported each other’s candidates.

Yesterday, Umno Youth delegates had rejected Zahid’s plans of forming a unity government.

Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said he is against any backdoor attempts to return Umno to power. This was supported by his deputy Shahril Hamdan.
