So what if Daim meets Umno MPs, says Anwar

(FMT) – Incoming PKR president Anwar Ibrahim says there is nothing wrong with Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) chairman Daim Zainuddin wanting to meet with Umno MPs.

Anwar said he himself often met with Daim to discuss issues together.

“What lie is it if Daim wants to meet Umno MPs? I met two at the airport recently. I asked them how they were, and if they wanted to remain in Umno.

“That is not a problem to me (for Daim to meet Umno MPs). I do not think it should become an issue which can cause tension among us,” he said in a press conference at the PKR headquarters here today.

He had been asked to comment on whether he was aware of any secret meetings with former Umno leaders such as Mustapa Mohamed to invite them to join Pakatan Harapan, and whether this was true.

Anwar said he believed that all leaders, whether in Parliament or not, had such discussions.

“There is talk of a purported a plot to bring in the whole of Umno to topple the party. Those are interpretations that I personally do not entertain,” he added.

Two days ago, Mustapa quit Umno, saying the party’s direction was no longer in line with his principles.

“The party has not made any effort to convince me that it is rejuvenating itself,” the former international trade and industry minister said in a statement.

Mustapa, who was the Kelantan Barisan Nasional chairman, also said Umno should be an “inclusive and moderate” party which takes the middle ground.
