Azmin submits only one name for Selangor MB to Sultan Sharafuddin
(NST) – Outgoing Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali today submitted the name of his potential successor to the Sultan of Selangor for his consent.
“I have presented (the name of the candidate) to Tuanku (Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah) after discussing the matter with the PKR leadership.
“I have also obtained their (PKR’s) consent to submit the candidate’s name to Tuanku. There is only one name and this is the final name.
“The candidate’s name will be revealed tomorrow,” he told reporters after an audience with the Sultan of Selangor at Istana Bukit Kayangan here today.
The meeting lasted for more than an hour and Azmin left the palace at 11.57am.
Azmin is vacating the post after being appointed economic affairs minister by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
When asked if a new state executive councillor (exco) will be named, Azmin said it will be known tomorrow if there is need to fill the spot.
“If there is a vacant exco seat to be filled, there will be a new candidate.”
Asked further if the candidate is a young or elderly man, Azmin merely replied: “(He is) a Malaysian.”
Azmin previously said the new Selangor MB may be picked among the current list of state excos.
Sungai Tua assemblyman Amirudin Shari, who is also a state exco, and Ijok assemblyman Dr Idris Ahmad have been identified as the frontrunners for the MB post.
When contacted by the New Straits Times at around 10am, both Amirudin and Dr Idris said they have not received any information about their possible appointment as the new Selangor MB.
If Sultan Sharafuddin consents to the appointment of the new Selangor MB, the swearing-in ceremony will be held tomorrow.
Asked if a rehearsal for the ceremony will be held at Istana Alam Shah today, Azmin said he was unaware of such an arrangement.
It is learnt that the rehearsal will be held at the palace anytime between this evening and tomorrow morning.
