MCA slams DAP’s Chinese New Year video, parody, claims meant to spread hatred (VIDEO)
(Malay Mail Online) – MCA has condemned opposition party DAP’s Chinese New Year video, which parodied Datuk Seri Najib Razak receiving a donation from the Saudi royal family, saying today that the 3-minute video was aimed at spreading hatred during the festive season.
MCA Youth national treasurer Michael Lee said that the DAP should be spreading goodwill instead of “anti-government sentiments” during the “sacred” Chinese New Year period.
“DAP’s Tony Pua and Teo Nie Ching’s action in releasing a spoof video clip spreading anti-government sentiment during the Chinese New Year celebration runs contrary to the traditional spirit of the festival and had left [sic] a bad taste in the mouth.
“Their actions are disgusting and an insult not only to the festival itself but their own intelligence as well,” he said in a statement today.
He added that the duo should have “scaled down” their antics during the festive season instead of making the “distasteful” video which parodied popular Chinese New Year Song Cai Shen Dao which translates to “The god of prosperity has arrived.”

In the video, Pua and Teo can be seen welcoming the God of Prosperity character with red angpau packets before the latter transforms into a man wearing a thobe and ghutra, commonly worn by Arabic men, holding a RM2.6 billion Ambank cheque.
The video also shows a group of people throwing fake money into the air, Pua showing off the Ambank cheque addressed to “Prime Minister” and Teo sporting a handbag while wearing what appears to be an oversized diamond ring.
The YouTube video has since been viewed 157,268, with 1,043 users “liking” the video and another 51 users “disliking” it.
Lee also accused Pua and Teo of “brainwashing” viewers into thinking that the Goods and Services tax (GST) was meant to “rob workers and the poor of their monies” by distorting facts, despite many other countries having adopted the tax scheme as well.
“Twisting the facts with malicious intention will only result in deeper misunderstanding among the people towards government policies, as well as damaged [sic] national image and economic growth,” he added.
In the video, Teo is seen carrying the GST logo, while Pua stands in a cardboard box labelled “lapar” (hungry) and collecting donations, singing that Putrajaya continues to collect GST from its citizens despite poor economic conditions.
“The country is poor, he collects GST, people are suffering, he doesn’t quite care. All ventures will be successful and all dreams come true,” they say.
Three minutes into the video, the duo wish viewers a happy Chinese New Year while asking them to also donate to DAP for their upcoming Sarawak elections campaign as the party did not have “friends in the Middle East.”
Lee also noted, however, that while DAP has repeatedly called for transparency when it came to political donors, the latter did not practice what it preached.
“It is a party which conducts public fundraising frequently but never makes public the related accounting details,” he said.
