Council of Eminent Persons won’t disband on PH’s 100th day in power: PM

(NST) – The Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) will not be dissolved this weekend.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that he still requires their services and has not decided on the matter yet.

“I never said (the CEP) would only be for 100 days. I still need their services.

“I haven’t decided on it yet,” he said when asked to comment on news reports that the council will be dissolved on Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) 100th day in power this weekend.

He was speaking to reporters after launching the new Cardiac Vascular Sentral specialist hospital here today.

On May 12, Dr Mahathir announced the formation of a “council of elders” tasked with advising the new PH government on economic and financial matters during the transition of power from the Barisan Nasional government.

The council is headed by former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin.

Other members are former Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz, former president and CEO of Petronas Tan Sri Hassan Merican, billionaire Tan Sri Robert Kuok and prominent economist Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram.

When asked how long the council will be operating, Dr Mahathir said: “Until we solve many of the problems. I myself cannot do that kind of work.”
