Dr M confirms Sungai Besi highway toll concession’s end, hints at PLUS compensation

(MMO) – Toll collections has ceased for portions of highways passing through the Sungai Besi toll plaza, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.

Dr Mahathir confirmed the concession agreement had stated that there would be no more toll imposed on the highway stretches that were under toll concessionaire ANIH Berhad, also hinting at future review or scrapping of tolls for highways currently under toll concessionaire PLUS Malaysia Berhad.

“The agreement says on May 31, the toll will stop being collected for this small area, Sungai Besi only, that we have done.

“So from now on, there is no toll charged but unfortunately we have to compensate PLUS for that part that belongs to them, but other things about PLUS we have not discussed,” he told reporters here after chairing the Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting.

PLUS Malaysia Berhad owns highways and also operates the Sungai Besi toll plaza, while ANIH’s highways where the toll concession period has ended passes through the same toll plaza.

Yesterday, the Malaysian Highway Authority announced that there will be no more toll collected from June 1 onwards for the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban and Salak expressway stretches at the PLUS-managed Sungai Besi toll plaza.

Both highways where the toll concession period had ended are not under PLUS, but under ANIH Berhad.

“This means, with the end of the concession period for those stretches, the toll prices at all exit and entry routes at the Sungai Besi toll plaza will drop between 50 per cent to one cent (or between RM0.40 and RM1.70) depending on the distance travelled and vehicle classification,” the LLM had said.

LLM said about 130,000 motorists will benefit from the lower prices, as they will now only be required to pay toll on the stretch of highways under PLUS and the two stretches of highway under ANIH would not be calculated as part of the toll charges.

In Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto for the 14th general elections, the coalition had pledged to review all highway toll concessions if it is voted into power.

“We will negotiate to obtain the best price to take over each toll concession with the ultimate goal of gradually abolishing toll collections,” it said in outlining its sixth promise in the manifesto, adding that the companies will be fairly compensated for the concessions that are taken over by the government.
