Tok Mat denies claim 2mil members left Umno

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has denied a claim by former party stalwart Annuar Musa that two million members had left the party.

(FMT) – Mohamad reminded the former Umno information chief to be careful when making statements about the party although it was within his right to do so.

“I don’t know where he got the numbers from (but) I can also claim that there are two million people who joined Umno.

“The people can decide for themselves (what to believe),” he told reporters after an event organised by Terengganu Umno here last night.

“Indeed, there are members who have quit the party, some followed (Annuar) and some were disappointed (with the Barisan Nasional-Pakatan Harapan collaboration) but the number is not that big.”

Speaking at a Perikatan Nasional rally in Negeri Sembilan recently, Annuar, who is now a PAS member, claimed that Umno lost more than two million members before the 15th general election.

Meanwhile, asked to comment on the upcoming state elections, Mohamad, who is popularly known as Tok Mat, said he was confident the parties and coalitions in the unity government could maintain control in the states they currently administer.

“The issue now is to make sure that BN can regain its footing and also win in states like Terengganu and Kedah,” he said.

PH-controlled Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Penang, and PAS-led Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu will hold elections after June.
