Apologise to win Umno, Malay support, youth chief tells DAP

Umno Youth has demanded an open apology from DAP for accusations levelled at them when the two parties were political rivals.

(FMT) – Umno Youth chief Akmal Saleh said the apology was necessary if DAP wanted to win the support of the Malays and Umno supporters in the upcoming state elections.

“If they can apologise to Gabungan Parti Sarawak, why not to us?,” he said, referring to the ruling coalition in the East Malaysian state.

Last year, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook publicly apologised to GPS leaders during a meeting before the formation of the unity government.

Loke had visited Sarawak to meet GPS chairman Abang Johari Openg and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Akmal, who is also the Merlimau assemblyman, said DAP must also prove that it was not anti-Malay or anti-Islam, a label which it had been branded with in the past.

He said there were boundaries that needed to be respected even though both parties were among the 19 component parties in the unity government.

“We share administrative space, but not ideologies. We transcend party politics while upholding the principles of our struggle. If anyone dares to cross the line, Umno Youth will be the first to respond and take action,” he said.
