Some Umno people want a snap GE15 because they are facing court cases: Anwar
(FMT) – The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob remains in effect beyond July 31, says Anwar Ibrahim.
The PH chairman said this is because only the clause prohibiting the dissolution of the Dewan Rakyat before July 31, for a general election (GE15) to be held, will automatically expire.
He added that the MoU is otherwise, still in place with some other parts of the pact still not fulfilled.
“The issues not resolved yet include the question of governance and the failure to control the rising cost of goods.
“Governance here covers corruption, which seems to be a daily occurrence. There are too many cases of public funds being mismanaged,” he told reporters after a function in his Port Dickson constituency.
Anwar said PH is also not happy with the way the government is managing the rising prices of goods.
“The cost of living is really a burden on the rakyat. All this, while ministers continue with their extravagant spending.”
Asked if PH is ready for GE15 now that Ismail is free to call for one, the PKR president said they are ready with the machinery in place to go into action if Parliament is dissolved.
“We are ready but the focus of the government should be on improving the economy to reduce the hardship faced by the people.
“The question is why are some quarters pressing for an urgent general election? If the only reason is to secure victory just to close their court cases, this is not tenable. This is no reason for an election to be held.
“Elections must be held to renew the mandate of the rakyat and not to save some people from conviction,” he added.
