PH never promised to wipe out PTPTN debts, PAS did, Asyraf told

The Setiawangsa MP pointed out that the only promise PH ever made was to delay required payments until graduates had a monthly income of RM4,000.

(FMT) – PKR’s Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has rubbished claims that Pakatan Harapan (PH) won the previous general election (GE14) on the back of promises to wipe out student loans.

This was in response to Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki’s claim that many had fallen for PH’s “lies” to erase student debts from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN).

In a Facebook post today, Nazmi rejected the claim, saying it was PAS which had made such a promise.

“If Asyraf did his research on manifestos for GE14, he would be pointing his finger at PAS and not Pakatan Harapan,” he said, adding that as of today, “PAS has been sitting in federal government longer than Pakatan Harapan ever did”.

The Setiawangsa MP pointed out that the only promise PH ever made was to delay required payments until graduates had a monthly income of RM4,000.

“We understood that PTPTN was a burden for graduates as there were still many of them who were earning low wages,” he said.

He also said the main person who should be held accountable over the issue of PTPTN debts is Wan Saiful Wan Jan, who has held the PTPTN chairman’s post since he was first appointed when PH took over government.

“Unfortunately, from Pakatan Harapan’s time till today, Wan Saiful and his team have yet to come up with a method of repayment that will help ease the graduates’ burden,” he said.
