Look at your own failures first, Najib tells Muhyiddin

(FMT) – Najib Razak has lashed out at former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin for turning the Melaka election campaign into an Umno-bashing exercise, saying that he should instead look at his own poor record in leading the country.

Najib, a former prime minister himself, reminded the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman that he had a string of failures that prove how ineffective he was during his 17 months as prime minister.

“If they do not pick on Umno in the Melaka polls campaign, it appears that they have nothing to talk about,” he said in Facebook post today.

Muhyiddin has been training his guns on Umno, saying PN was going against “kleptocrats” in Barisan Nasional (BN), as he urged the people of Melaka to vote for PN in the Nov 20 polls.

Najib raised the many failures of the Muhyiddin administration, starting with the Covid-19 lockdowns which he said were “half-baked” and among the longest in the world.

“They were ineffective as the country continued to report a high number of new Covid-19 cases and deaths, making Malaysia one of the highest per capita in the world,” he said.

He added that during Muhyiddin’s tenure as prime minister, Malaysia also recorded the lowest foreign direct investment (FDI) in the region.

“Muhyiddin’s administration failed to make any impact despite spending RM600 billion in various stimulus packages.

“However, the government purchased Toyota Vellfire as official cars at a time when the government says there is not much money left in its coffers,” Najib said.

He added that the cancellation of the high-speed rail (HSR) project between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore by the former PN-led government has also deprived Melaka of projected economic development.

“The national debt has also increased by almost RM200 billion in just two years. These are his failures,” Najib said.

Meanwhile, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said Muhyiddin will be remembered as the worst prime minister for his failure in handling the Covid-19 health crisis and abuse of power in declaring an emergency to “prolong his premiership”.

“Muhyiddin’s latest comments have also shown that he, and not Azmin Ali, was the main conspirator behind the Sheraton Move which led to the fall of the Pakatan Harapan government last year,” Lim said in a statement.
