Azalina resigns as deputy speaker, claims source

(The Star) – Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Azalina Othman is said to have resigned from her post, says a source.

“Azalina has sent in her resignation as a Deputy Speaker to the Parliament,” said the source.

It was not known if the resignation was effective immediately.

A number of MPs from different parties also confirmed she had resigned.

The Pengerang MP’s news of possible resignation today (Aug 23) comes as the newly minted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob was in the midst of preparing his new Cabinet.

Azalina was one of the Umno MPs who retracted their support for the previous Perikatan Nasional government under then Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin which led to its downfall.

“Ismail might have shortlisted her for a Cabinet post,” said the source further.

The Star has contacted Azalina for confirmation on the matter but has yet to receive a reply.
