Unity still the key, says PAS, after PPBM confirms letter from Umno
(FMT) – PAS has maintained that it wants to strengthen its ties in both Muafakat Nasional (MN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN), despite confirmation that Umno will not be working with PPBM in the next general election.
PAS strategic director Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali said his party remains consistent with its goal to unite all Malay-Muslim parties, adding that this was the key to victory.
“As PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has stressed, we will strengthen MN and reinforce PN. But any letters sent by Umno (to PN parties) will be discussed at the PN leadership (meeting),” he told FMT.
Asked if PAS’ stand would cause unease among both Umno and PPBM leaders, he said this reaction was up to them.
“This is PAS’ stand. Every party deserves their own views. PAS is keeping with its stand, we will work as hard as we can to unite the ummah,” he said.
PPBM confirmed today that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi sent a letter to Muhyiddin Yassin informing the prime minister of the party’s stance with PPBM.
Zahid’s letter, which came after an Umno Supreme Council meeting at Janda Baik, Pahang, is understood to have stated that Umno would not cooperate with PPBM in the next general election and that the party would only work with the government until Parliament was dissolved.
PPBM secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said PPBM will discuss its stance with its Perikatan Nasional allies PAS, STAR, SAPP and Gerakan.
