2 Perak Umno exco members touted as MB candidates

(FMT) – Umno members in Perak are said to be pushing for two candidates for the menteri besar’s post, with one said to represent the “new look” and the other the “old school” of the party.

They are Rungkup assemblyman Shahrul Zaman Yahya and Perak Umno liaison chief Saarani Mohamad.

This comes after Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu, who is also PPBM deputy president, lost a vote of confidence in the state assembly today. Faizal is expected to resign his post.

An Umno member with close links to the talks on choosing the next menteri besar said the discussions had been going on for the past few weeks.

“There are two groups, one recommending Shahrul and the other Saarani,” he told FMT.

Shahrul is presently in charge of the state industry, investment and corridor development committee.

Rungkup is under the parliamentary constituency of Bagan Datuk.

The source said Shahrul is seen to represent the “new look and thought of Umno”.

“He has a great personality and knows how to mix with everyone. He knows how to keep a good rapport with everyone,” the source said, adding that he is also liked by the Chinese and Indians in Perak.

As for Saarani, who is the Kota Tampan assemblyman, the source said he is well liked by those who want Umno to remain “a very Malay-centric party”.

The 62-year-old has been the rural development, entrepreneur development, cooperatives and consumer affairs councillor since 2004.
