Guan Eng slams govt’s defence of appointing politicians to GLCs

(FMT) – DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today criticised the government’s statement that the appointment of politicians to lead government-linked companies (GLCs) helps provide checks and balances, saying it contradicts practices of good governance.

In a statement, he said it was absurd to justify such appointments by saying the politicians had the necessary expertise or experience.

“Politicians cannot be more proficient, capable or knowledgeable than experts or professionals,” he added, claiming that politicians and professionals have different priorities when serving in GLCs.

The statement on politicians appointed to GLCs was made by Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who said this also ensured that they observe the government’s aspirations.

Lim said the previous administration led by Pakatan Harapan (PH) only appointed politicians to serve in statutory bodies that exercise regulatory powers.

“Statutory bodies are generally not involved in business and have limited contracts to offer in scope and size,” he said.

He said there was no need for politicians to be appointed to GLCs to ensure compliance with government policies as the companies could be compelled to adhere to ministerial directives.

He also accused Putrajaya of using such appointments as political rewards to remain in power, asking if the individuals now leading the GLCs would continue to probe the alleged financial wrongdoings exposed by PH.
