Anwar blocked Wan Azizah from taking over as PM8

Anwar sabotaged his own wife so that he can capture the throne. Instead, the throne went to Muhyiddin Yassin. Anwar did not want to be merely the husband of the prime minister. He wanted to be that prime minister. However, in the end, Anwar ended up with nothing.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Raja Petra Kamarudin

When Tunku Abdul Rahman stepped down as prime minister, his deputy, Tun Razak Hussein, stepped in to take over.

When Tun Razak died, his deputy, Tun Hussein Onn, took over. Hussein Onn then tried to appoint Tun Ghazali Shafie as his deputy. Umno, however, blocked him from doing that because Ghazali was not one of the Umno vice-presidents.

The three vice-presidents were Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (a.k.a. Ku Li), Tun Ghaffar Baba and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (in that order of priority). Ku Li volunteered to forgo his turn while Ghaffar did not quite have the right ‘credentials’. Hence Hussein was forced to appoint Mahathir as his deputy.

In short, Hussein was forced to follow convention (kelaziman) and had no choice in the matter (although the Federal Constitution of Malaysia is “silent” regarding the post of Deputy Prime Minister).

Of course, after Mahathir took over as prime minister in 1981, he began to challenge the convention and did what he felt like doing without caring whether he was violating the party tradition or Malay customs. In short, Mahathir acted very un-Malay and un-Umno, as if he was lord and master of everything that the eye can see.

Anyway, when Hussein Onn stepped down as prime minister, his deputy, Mahathir, automatically took over, just like what happened before that — even though Hussein was not in favour of Mahathir.

Anwar blocked Wan Azizah from taking over as PM8 so that he can become PM8 instead

In fact, Hussein was not in favour of appointing Mahathir as his deputy, let alone allowing Mahathir to take over as prime minister. But Hussein respected tradition and he did what had to be done according to tradition and not what he would have liked to do (which means breaking from tradition).

In that same spirit, when Mahathir resigned as prime minister in February 2020, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail should have automatically taken over as the prime minister or PM8 (like what happened in 2003). If Pakatan Harapan had mengadap (had an audience with) Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong and had sembah (presented) to Tuanku that Wan Azizah, Mahathir’s deputy, is now the designated prime minister, Tuanku would have perkenan (consented).

But Pakatan Harapan did not do that. Why? Instead, they begged Mahathir to withdraw his resignation and to stay on as prime minister. Hence Mahathir “cancelled” his resignation and came back as the “interim” prime minister, a very weird turn of events. And that turned the whole thing upside down.

According to convention, Wan Azizah should have taken over as the acting prime minister and then Pakatan Harapan should sembah to His Majesty the Agong for her to get sworn in as PM8. What stopped Pakatan Harapan from doing this? Why crawl on your hands and knees and beg Mahathir to stay on?

Anwar sabotaged his own wife and Muhyiddin won the throne

The answer is obvious. If Pakatan Harapan appoints Wan Azizah as the acting prime minister and then propose that His Majesty the Agong swear her in as PM8, then Anwar Ibrahim will never become the prime minister (whether PM8, PM9 or PM10). However, if they can get Mahathir to come back as the “interim” prime minister or PM7.5, then Anwar can take over as PM8 in May 2020, just three months away.

In short, Anwar Ibrahim blocked his own wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, from becoming PM8 because he wanted the job for himself. If Wan Azizah becomes PM8 then Anwar is never going to become the prime minister till the day he dies.

Anwar sabotaged his own wife so that he can capture the throne. Instead, the throne went to Muhyiddin Yassin. Anwar did not want to be merely the husband of the prime minister. He wanted to be that prime minister. However, in the end, Anwar ended up with nothing.

And, today, Anwar is just another Lim Kit Siang and Khalid Samad, barking day in and day out at everything that Perikatan Nasional does. A sad ending for the longest prime minister-in-waiting in world history.
