This is not Parliament, PKR veep says on no-confidence vote against Anwar

(FMT) – PKR vice-president Shamsul Iskandar today played down a youth leader’s call for a vote of no confidence against party president Anwar Ibrahim ahead of PKR’s national congress this weekend.

“Vote of no confidence? This is not the Parliament for him to table a vote of no confidence,” he said, referring to Lembah Pantai PKR Youth vice-chief Nazrin Idham Razali.

Speaking to reporters in Parliament here, he said such motions should be made at the end of annual general meetings for each division.

Given that each branch had concluded its general meeting with no such matter raised, he said: “This is just a last-minute matter that is now only being spoken about.”

Nazrin had made the call for a no-confidence vote against Anwar yesterday, accusing the latter of failing to carry out his duties, respect the mandate of members and deliver on the reform agenda.

However, Shamsul said only “two or three” PKR Youth members wanted to table such a motion.

“They are not even prominent,” he added. “So to me, I feel that this is not a serious matter.

“All party members are enthusiastic about attending the (PKR national congress) in Melaka because this is the first time Anwar will be officially leading as PKR president in 20 years since the party’s establishment.”

He also said action could be taken if any other gathering is held on the same day as the congress.

“We may take action according to legal channels and the party constitution,” he said.

He was responding to talk that a separate PKR assembly, to be officiated by Anwar’s deputy Mohamed Azmin Ali, would be held at the same time as the national congress.
