Report: Sarawak PKR branches seek Baru’s ouster as state chief

Works Minister Baru Bian is allegedly facing a bid to remove him as Sarawak PKR chairman, a news report said.

(The Borneo Post) – Citing party sources, See Hua Daily News said today that a petition has been launched in the party to demand that Baru be replaced as the state chief.

The sources claimed that Baru was seen as being incapable of leading the party in the next state election as he was occupied by too many responsibilities.

Besides being a federal minister, Baru is also Ba’Kelalan assemblyman and Selangau Member of Parliament.

All PKR branches in northern Sarawak, except for Lawas which is headed by Baru, have reportedly signed the petition.

The branches involved are said to be Limbang, Sibuti, Miri, Baram and Hulu Rajang.

The petition will be handed over to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a meeting attended by all state branch leaders in Miri on November 23, the report said.

The Borneo Post is contacting Baru for comments.

On May 26, Anwar had announced that Baru would take charge of the PKR election machinery for the Sarawak election with help from party secretary general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution and three vice-presidents Dr Xavier Jayakumar, Tian Chua and Ali Biju.

The state election is due in 2021.
