PAC to reopen investigations into 1MDB

(The Star) – The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will reopen investigations into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) as soon as possible.

Deputy PAC chairman Wong Kah Woh said he will discuss the matter with chairman Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee and the remaining members upon their appointments.

“I will discuss with them to reopen 1MDB investigations so a more comprehensive report, one that takes into consideration the newer statements on the matter, can be tabled in Parliament,” he told a press conference in Parliament on Tuesday (Aug 7).

Wong and Kiandee were appointed to lead the PAC earlier in Dewan Rakyat.

The remaining members will be chosen by the Selection Committee later on.

The PAC had in the last term looked into 1MDB, but had failed to re-investigate after new statements from the United States Department of Justice emerged in mid 2016.

Wong also said the PAC will consider the possibility of opening up proceedings to the public to allow for greater transparency, except for proceedings involving national security or special circumstances.

“This new PAC will also work closely with the National Audit Department and launch investigations into the irregularities and wrongdoings in its report.

“We will also look through existing laws to ensure enough legal protection for whistleblowers or witnesses,” he said.
