Hadi actually against 1MDB problems, says aide

(MMO) – PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s press secretary denied today perceptions that the Islamist party head was fine with the alleged mismanagement in 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Abdul Malik Ab Razak said PAS merely advocated changing the government through elections, not through foreign intervention or street protests, which he claimed differentiated the Opposition party from other parties.

“The conclusion is that it is clear that the president’s stand from the beginning has been consistent about resolving 1MDB’s problems by demanding for a transparent investigation within the country without foreign intervention, by reforming the legislative system, and through the separation of powers and independence from the Cabinet for the National Audit Department, the Attorney-General’s Chambers, the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) and the police,” Abdul Malik said in a statement.

In an open letter to Malaysian political parties written last month, Hadi said history should not be repeated by inviting foreign quarters to solve the country’s problems, such as 1MDB and previous financial controversies, noting that foreign intervention had caused the downfall of the Islamic government in Melaka.

The statement came after the US Department of Justice’s latest civil filing that sought to seize US$540 million (RM2.31 billion) in assets obtained by funds allegedly stolen from 1MDB.

Hadi’s press secretary listed today several of the PAS president’s statements since May 2015 criticising the controversy surrounding the state investment firm.

“In fact, in the history of battles between Umno and PAS in elections, only once did PAS not oppose Umno, which was when PAS was part of Barisan Nasional (BN). The other 12 elections, PAS had taken on Umno, including in the coming 14th General Elections.

“In fact, the president has never been an Umno member, whereas some of the leadership of other Opposition parties were former leaders and members of Umno,” said Abdul Malik.

He added that all of Hadi’s opinions have been elaborated by the PAS deputy president and the party leadership.

“To our political enemies, please learn to read and spell before looking for words that say the PAS president supports the mismanagement of 1MDB,” said Abdul Malik.
