Opposition mum on bloated fees of three Penang roads

Other Opposition leaders including PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar and Rafizi Ramli, DAP’s Teresa Kok, Zaid Ibrahim and Tony Pua as well as Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir had all refused to comment on the issue despite being contacted by phone and WhatsApp.

(The Star) – Pakatan Harapan leaders have chosen to stay silent on allegations by Barisan Nasional that the DAP-led Penang government overpaid on consultancy fees for three road projects.

Previously, the Barisan strategic communications team led by Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan had provided documents from the Board of Engineers (BEM) stating that payments by the state government for consultancy fees for the three main roads project was 400% above standard rates.

PKR supreme council member Tian Chua told The Star Online that he was unable to verify the allegations made by Barisan.

“There is no way I can verify what he said is correct. I suppose he should show proof.

“He is in the government. If he thinks something is wrong, go the right way.

“Go to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and try to find legal means to take action,” Tian Chua said.

Penang Institute head of Kuala Lumpur branch Ong Kian Ming said he was “not in the position to answer”.

“Why don’t you ask the Penang government this question. I am not in the position to answer,” he said when contacted.

On Thursday, Barisan said the consultancy fees amounted to RM220mil for the three roads which were allegedly three years late in construction.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof had also issued a statement confirming that the payments were excessive and stands by the BEM calculations.
