Jamal punched, two Bersih people hurt in scuffles

Melee when Red Shirts try to disrupt Zuraida’s group in Ampang, 50 Red Shirts block Hishammuddin’s group in Hulu Langat.

(FMT) – Red Shirts leader Jamal Md Yunus was reported to have been punched in the nose, and two Bersih supporters injured in separate incidents involving Bersih road convoys today.

Jamal, head of Sungai Besar Umno, was reported to have been punched in the face in a scuffle at Ampang Point shopping centre and three Red Shirt supporters said to have been detained.

Two Bersih supporters were also reported to have been injured in Hulu Langat this morning in a confrontation with about 50 Red Shirt supporters who forced a convoy to turn back.

Bersih’s official Facebook account said the convoy’s chief coordinator, and a security personnel were injured. A video clip was posted showing a group dressed in red shirts kicking a motorcyclist in a yellow t- shirt.

At Ampang Point, Red Shirt leader Jamal was reported to have shouted “Polis tumbuk saya (the police punched me)” but later told reporters that it was “one of Zuraida’s boys”.




Jamal and his supporters had been following PKR’s Zuraida Kamaruddin, as she and PKR members carried out publicity for the Nov 19 Bersih rally.

A scuffle ensued with policemen guarding the exit. Nallan Dhanabalan of Ampang PKR was quoted by Malaysiakini as saying that plainclothes policemen punched Jamal when police were trying to separate the two groups.

In Hulu Langat, Bersih activist Hishammuddin Rais said one Bersih supporter was punched and another had been kicked. The convoy turned back and headed towards Kajang when more than 50 Red Shirts turned up.
