(Bernama) – Malaysian singer and director Namewee was arrested at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Sunday (Aug 21) after the music video for his song “Oh My God!” was accused of insulting Islam and made viral.

North East District police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, was detained at around 3.30pm to help with investigations.

“The man was arrested at KLIA and will be brought to Pulau Pinang where he will assist in investigations into the case. He will be remanded on Thursday morning,” said Mr Mior.

The video clip featured a group of four men singing a song in Mandarin and lasted around four minutes.

Believed to have insulted Islam, the video drew flak from the local community and several parties – including a non-governmental organisation – lodged police reports on the matter.
