Dr M: I’ll back whoever supports the Citizens’ Declaration

(MMO) – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today that he would campaign for the candidates in the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections who support the Citizens’ Declaration.

The former prime minister and ex-Umno president, who left the Malay ruling party last February, said he did not belong to Umno nor any other party.

“(I will support) the quarters who back the Citizens’ Declaration,” Dr Mahathir told a press conference here, referring to the petition by the bipartisan Save Malaysia movement, which he heads, that calls for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s resignation.

“I don’t belong to any party. In fact, I don’t belong to Umno because there’s no more Umno, but Najib’s party. That’s why I left Najib’s party.

“If PAS signs (the Citizens’ Declaration), I will support them. But they didn’t sign it,” he added.

The Citizens’ Declaration has signatories from Pakatan Harapan parties PKR, the DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), besides prominent civil society leaders like Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan and Maria Chin Abdullah.
