Tony Pua confirms Azmin has withdrawn financial support for Sungai Besar

Tony Pua

(MMO) – Selangor DAP chairman Tony Pua praised today Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali’s overt move to separate his state government from supporting ally Parti Amanah Negara’s candidate in the Sungai Besar parliamentary by-election.

Pua said the Pakatan Harapan pact is against using state resources for political projects, including its member parties’ campaigning.

“By-elections should be conducted between political parties and not by abusing state or national resources,” the Petaling Jaya Utara MP told a news conference here.

“It is a good thing the Selangor state government is not using the state funds to campaign during by-elections,” he said.

Pua was asked to comment on Azmin’s absence at Pakatan Harapan functions earlier this week promoting its candidate for the June 18 vote.

Azmin is also PKR deputy president.

On June 1, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said her party had decided it was better for Azmin not to be present at those functions so as to maintain harmony within the Selangor government that still had PAS representatives in it.

Azmin had wanted PKR to stand in Sungai Besar and was negotiating an agreement with PAS to ensure a straight fight in the seat previously.

Nominations for the Sungai Besar by-election, as well as for Kuala Kangsar, a federal seat in Perak, must be filed officially this Sunday while polling is set for June 18.
