Ramkarpal Singh says working with the former PM can erode public confidence in the Opposition.

(FMT) – Former Premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad is in no position to comment on Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) unity, said a DAP lawmaker today.

Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh took Mahathir to task over his claim that the Opposition would not be able to win in the upcoming twin by-elections as unity in the coalition was left wanting.

He argued that working with Mahathir itself could erode public confidence in them.

“He’s the last person we should be working with, and for him to comment on whether we are united … I don’t think he is in any position to dictate terms to us.

“The Opposition can win the two by-elections provided necessary effort is put into it,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here today.

When asked about the eight-page handwritten letter by Anwar Ibrahim warning PKR to be wary of its political alliance with Mahathir, Ramkarpal said the former Opposition leader was right in doing so.

He also said that Mahathir had his own agenda and personal interests in leading the Citizens’ Declaration, which calls for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s resignation.

“I think it is sound advice that should be taken into account, not only by his party members but also everyone.

“It is very timely advice and a stern reminder that Mahathir’s agenda unfortunately does not reflect reforms.

“Our whole agenda is for institutional reforms and Mahathir does not symbolise reform.”

Anwar, who is currently serving a five-year jail term for sodomy, had in the letter described the Citizens’ Declaration as being a Mahathir document in principle which is flawed and inconsistent with PKR’s reform agenda.

He also cautioned his party leaders of the dangers that come with the collaboration with Mahathir and former Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin.
