(FMT) – The by-elections in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar will be held simultaneously on June 18 , the Election Commission (EC) announced today, with nomination for the two parliamentary seats fixed for June 5.

EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah, who made the announcement at the commission’s headquarters, also said that early voting has been set for June 14.

Hashim said there were a total of 42,655 eligible voters in Sungai Besar and 32,949 in Kuala Kangsar.

The voter registry will be released on Apr 22 on the EC website, while hard copies will be available from April 23.

Hashim also said the estimated costs for both by-elections was RM 2.7 million.

He said this was the second time a by-election was held during Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month.

“We hope that this means we will see less insults being thrown about,” he said, at a press conference, here today.

The by-elections for the two parliamentary seats were triggered by the deaths of its incumbents, Deputy Minister Noriah Kasnon and Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad in a helicopter crash in Sarawak last week.
