Dr M-Opposition team formed because no-confidence vote futile, Pua says
(Malay Mail Online) – The federal opposition joined hands with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to form the Save Malaysia movement because other avenues to remove Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak from were not likely to succeed, DAP’s Tony Pua said.
The Petaling Jaya Utara MP said the opposition was more keen on forming a new political alliance to ramp up pressure on the Najib administration than on trying to push through a vote of no-confidence against the prime minister in the Dewan Rakyat, a bid he said would never see the light of day.
“For the vote of no confidence, the time for that has passed. The vote of no confidence is a futile exercise. It is on the Order Paper but you will never get it heard. We have put it in before,” he told a press conference at DAP’s headquarters today.
“It is more important now to forge new political alliances and create a new political alignment to break the Barisan Nasional (BN) hegemony,” Pua added.
The lawmaker said the federal opposition is “100 per cent” involved in the Save Malaysia movement, formed recently after the signing of the “Citizens’ Declaration” that was unveiled by Dr Mahathir.
“It is a political landscape that is fluid and is changing. It is for us to forge what is coming,” Pua said.
Malay Mail Online reported earlier today that the Save Malaysia movement is now pinning its hopes on winning the support of a dozen key Umno leaders in its campaign to oust Najib, instead of pushing forward a no-confidence vote in Parliament.
A spokesperson claimed that the group has identified some 12 influential Umno leaders for support, including members of the party’s supreme council, veterans, and those from Johor and Sabah.
