(The Malaysian Insider) – Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) is ready to face Barisan Nasional and former colleagues in PAS in three-corner contests in the next general election if it has no choice, says its president Mohamad Sabu. But he added that Amanah would still negotiate with PAS, to ensure that the opposition parties faced Barisan in straight fights.

“Actually, we have not really discussed general election issues yet. We will try our best to prevent it (multi-candidate fights) but if forced to, what can we do?” he told The Malaysian Insider.

Mohamad, also known as Mat Sabu, revealed this during a high tea organised by Amanah in Skudai, Johor.

He said Amanah was now focused on building up the party’s structure, including setting up its mid-level divisions, and registering and increasing its members.

Amanah is part of new opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan which also includes DAP and PKR. PAS has decided not to join the new pact and its leaders say they are willing to contest Barisan, DAP and Amanah.

It considers Amanah, which is formed from its former leaders, a party of traitors while DAP is seen as an enemy. PAS however has maintained relations with PKR through the latter’s deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali.
