(NST) – Former Umno member Datuk Khairuddin Abu Hassan was arrested as his action of using foreign legal channels was a form of sabotage to the country’s economic stability.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, in a statement tonight, said police were also investigating claims that Khairuddin had fed false information to foreign agencies.

“Police regard seriously the allegations by Pas Pokok Sena MP Datuk Mahfuz Omar that the force was being used by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to silence anyone who tries to expose the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) issue.

“The assemblyman should be aware that probes into 1MDB, which are still ongoing, are not only being conducted by police, but also the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Bank Negara and the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

“It is a known fact that Khairuddin has lodged a report regarding this issue, and he should give the Malaysian authorities the opportunity and time to carry out our investigations.

“Instead, he chose to use foreign legal channels especially Britain, Hong Kong, France and the United States with the intention of putting international pressure on Malaysia,” he said.

Khalid said the former Umno Batu Kawan deputy chief had invited foreign intervention into Malaysia’s affairs, and was clearly intended as a challenge against the country’s justice system and to taint Malaysian law enforcement agencies’ credibility.
