(MMO) – Permatang Pauh PAS has warned PKR against fielding president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail for the by-election there, claiming local sentiments were against such move.

English daily The Star quoted the division’s information chief, Jamsari Samad, as saying PKR risks an upset if it insists on fielding the family members of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the May 7 poll.

“This is our conclusion based on ground sentiment. We know that choosing the candidate is PKR’s prerogative, but generally the people here do not want Dr Wan Azizah or any of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s family members to contest,” Jamsari said in the report.

The PAS man had also reportedly warned PKR against discussing hudud at their ceramah events, claiming the issue was a “no-no” as it was considered “sacred” to the locals.

“If PKR does not want to create an upset here, it should also tell speakers at their ceramah never to discuss hudud, as it is a sacred matter for folk here,” he was quoted as saying.

Jamsari added that it would be hard to justify Dr Wan Azizah’s return to the seat because she told voters after making way for Anwar to recapture the seat in 2008 that she had wanted to leave politics.

“In 2008, when Wan Azizah resigned months after winning the seat for a third term, she said she was retiring to take care of her grandchildren.

“It is going to be tough to justify Wan Azizah’s return if PKR fields her here again,” he said.
