Himpunan Hijau chairman Wong Tack will be contesting under the DAP ticket for the Bentong parliamentary constituency in Pahang.
In announcing this, DAP said today that the move would strengthen the opposition pact’s chances in toppling the Barisan Nasional-stronghold, which is currently under Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai.
“We are up against a giant in Bentong, so we cannot field in just any candidate, but a whole organisation: Himpunan Hijau,” DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said at a press conference today.
“If Pakatan Rakyat can win over Bentong, then BN will certainly fall in Putrajaya,” he said.
Wong said that if he were to become the MP for Bentong, he would ensure that the controversial rare earth plant in Kuantan would be closed down.
But he added that if Australian mining company Lynas Corp were able to comply with local procedures in setting up the plant, he would welcome it, echoing Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s stance.
