We will give Liow three choices, says JPJ
(The Star) – As Health Minister, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai is entitled to get the WWW 15 number plate for free, said the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
“He (Liow) has three choices. He can get the number plate for free, he can pay the amount he had originally bid, or if he is no longer interested, he can reject the offer,” said its director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan in a statement yesterday.
He explained that as a minister, Liow was entitled to the free registration plate as earlier agreed between the Government and JPJ.
It was reported that Liow bought the number plate “WWW 15” with a bid of RM24,200.
This was based on a list uploaded on JPJ’s website.
Liow had said that he chose the number 15 because that was the number on his grandfather’s car.
However, Liow, who is also MCA deputy president, insisted that the number meant “nothing special” and was not important to him.
JPJ had raked in a record RM12mil in sales for the highly coveted WWW vehicle registration series.
Solah said they had received Liow’s application on May 14, the last day of bidding for the WWW vehicle registration series.
He added that the JPJ would continue to be transparent in announcing the names of bidders for popular number plates to the public.
“This is in line with our principle of transparency in managing applications for vehicle registration numbers,” he said, adding that results for winners of previous series had also been revealed to the public.
