(Bernama) – Political parties were yesterday reminded not to use religion in politics to win public support and votes.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said religion should not be made a tool to ensure the people would continue to support the leadership of a political party.

“There could be political turbulence which will worsen the situation if religion is used for a political motive,” he said.

Earlier, Ahmad Zahid was a guest on BernamaTV’s “Helo Malaysia” programme titled “Intan dan Kaca” (Glass and Diamonds) which discussed Umno’s struggle for the past 66 years.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also defence minister, said issues like religion should not be used to garner votes as such an action could defile the sanctity of the religion.
