Abdul Ghani Calls on Malays to Defend Umno

(Bernama) – Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman has called on Umno members and the Malays to defend the party from attempts by the opposition to cripple it ahead of the coming general election. Abdul Ghani, who is state Umno liaison chief, said the Malays had no other choices other than Umno because the party had done a lot of good deeds to them.

“Don’t ever allow the opposition to cripple this party for the Malays,” he

said at the Umno flag run in conjunction with the party 66th anniversary, at the Melaka-Johor border in Kesang, today.

About 3,000 people attended the event, including representatives from both states.

At the event, Abdul Ghani handed the Umno flag to Melaka chief ministernDatuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam who then handed it over to the Melaka Umno Youth to proceed with the run towards Bukit Jalil National Stadium.

Abdul Ghani said Umno should be defended because it was the party which had defended the Malay Rulers, promoted Islam, upheld the Malay language as the national language and fought for the Malay economy.

He added that the opposition parties had been targeting Umno as they knew it was the party which formed the bulwark of the Barisan Nasional’s strength.
