Family Socialization

What makes family life complicated is the older generation. They want things to be too perfect. Being perfect doesn’t really exist but they think this is the only way to keep things closer or organised. By keeping too close an eye on everything the family does, it can break a family apart.

When you get a call from your cousin for a dinner, does the family really get together? All of us have been to dinners which are most likely a dramatic version of showing love towards each other – but only a little sense of love can be seen and felt. No one really bothers or cares as long as they get to fill their tummy with some good food and if anyone from the family could prepare some nice desserts, it makes the dinner just a perfect DRAMA!

What I normally do is to bake some nice blueberry cheese tarts, and why I do so is because I just love it when people say my tarts really taste good. And for the veteran chefs, they will comment a little as in my pastries need to be a little thicker and so forth. I get all the feedback and improve the next time I bake it.

When talking about these tarts, it simply relates us to life. The pastry is always our parents or in other words, the ruler. You can’t change the measurement for the pastries as it will either turn to be very hard or too soft. Since it’s a family dinner and having folks with shaky teeth and even false teeth, I don’t want them to ‘get hurt real bad’. So, the pastry needs to be perfect.

Then comes the cream cheese, oh! I just love this part. These are my kind of people. The younger generation of the family. It does really matter how much the filling is because as long as there are some cheese in it, the tart will taste good. Family dinners will be too boring if there is no younger generation who doesn’t bother with family politics. Any random thing which happens that night will capture our heart and we will end up laughing about it for years. Our joke is always about the pastry “parent, uncles, aunties, grandparents”. These guys will make our day.

The jam is definitely the kids. They don’t care what the others have to say. All they know is to be with their cousins and their toys and they are done for the day.

What makes family life complicated is the older generation. They want things to be too perfect. Being perfect doesn’t really exist but they think this is the only way to keep things closer or organised. By keeping too close an eye on everything the family does, it can break a family apart. Just be who you are and family members should stop comparing each other – who has a bigger house, who drives the most expensive car, whose kids are in private school, who could send their kids overseas. All this makes life less complicated.

Family is not who we choose but it is to whom God wants us to be connected. Parents are always like the rough part of the tarts but when you have a small bite it just makes the tarts taste a lot better, at the same time keeps the family united. Parents should make things less complicated.
