KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 12 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad warned the government today against entering a regional arms race, just weeks after the Ministry of Defence announced the procurement of patrol vessels worth RM6 billion.

The former prime minister of 22 years reminded the present leadership that arms dealers would continue to create a suspicious environment with Malaysia’s neighbours.

“When arms dealers came to me to sell something and said there is no need for it they would always but the other country nearby has bought it,” said Dr Mahathir at a forum on Malay dilemma here.

“It made our military officer unhappy because they don’t have the same toys as our neighbour,” he added.
