Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today admitted that he still does not understand what “1 Malaysia” means, a concept introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in an attempt to foster national unity.

“I admit that I still do not fully understand what is ‘1 Malaysia’, I am worried people will assume ‘1 Malaysia’ is ‘Malaysian Malaysia’” said Mahathir when asked by an Umno member at a forum on the position of the Malays here.

“I think a study needs to be done, and explanation must be given, on the effect of such slogans,” he added.

“Many people have asked me. But most people support it because it came from the No 1 leader,” he said.

Dr Mahathir explained how Islam Hadhari, introduced by former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Badawi, is no longer discussed as a result of failure to explain the concept.

“Now nobody talks about Islam Hadhari, because we are confused, for five years they try to explain Islam Hadhari, but nobody understands,” said Dr Mahathir.

“But Malaysia Boleh is easy, everyone understands, because we can,” he added, referring to the slogan introduced during his administration.
