Molotov cocktails thrown at home of Kuching MP

(The Star) – Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen was shocked to discover that Molotov cocktails had been thrown at his family home.

Fortunately, there was no damage.

Chong, also Kota Sentosa assemblyman and Sarawak DAP secretary, said he learnt of the incident when one of the family’s maids woke him at 7.30am Tuesday.

“We discovered traces of kerosene, broken glass and pieces of burnt cloth in the compound. Thankfully nothing was damaged, except for a plant or two which were singed,” he told reporters when met at his house at Jalan Tabuan here.

He immediately called the police’s mobile unit before lodging a report at Simpang Tiga police station at 8am.

Chong, a lawyer by training, said he believed the attack could have been a politically-motivated attempt to intimidate him.

“I have not been very active in my legal practice and have seldom handled private cases in the last few years, so it’s not likely to be related to my legal work.

“However, it won’t dissuade me from continuing my political struggle,” he said.

He also said he would be more careful with his personal safety from now on.

“This is the first time something like this has happened in my 10 years’ political career and is totally uncalled for,” he said, adding that police were investigating the incident.
