Mahathir merely suggested Malaysia buys jets from China

(The Star) – Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahahtir Mohamad says he has written to the European Union (EU) over its campaign against Malaysian palm oil.

Asked if he had spoken to any EU representatives, he said, “No, but I have written to them”.

Dr Mahathir had previously warned the EU that Malaysia might retaliate if it continued boycotting Malaysian palm oil.

He said Malaysia may think of buying airplanes from China or other countries as one of its retaliatory measures.

However, speaking to reporters after the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services’ (Cuepacs) launch of the MyCuepacsCare takaful programme on Monday (March 25), Dr Mahathir said Malaysia would not be buying any fighter jets as his comment was merely a suggestion.

He said there are many other products that Malaysia can look into.

He added that he would be discussing, with his Indonesian counterpart, strategies to overcome EU’s palm oil ban.

The European Parliament is reportedly in the process of banning the use of palm oil for biofuel while several retailers in Britain and Iceland have announced a boycott of palm oil products.
