The real story behind the two Umno-PAS marriages

Now, on PAS and Umno ‘getting married’, the late Tok Guru Nik Aziz Nik Mat, then the Spiritual Leader of the party, said the only reason PAS exists is because Umno will not implement Islam. If Umno can agree to implement Islam, then there is no longer any need for PAS. PAS, in fact, can be closed down and all the PAS members can join Umno.

Wong Chun Wai: pro-DAP anti-PAS writer

A person may be a ‘seasoned journalist’, such as Wong Chun Wai. But that does not mean if you are a seasoned journalist you are not biased or prejudiced. And in Chun Wai’s latest piece, ‘Marrying when it’s convenient’, he reveals his pro-DAP and anti-PAS sentiments (READ THE ARTICLE HERE).

People say I should be a neutral journalist but then my writings show I am not. First of all, I am not a journalist. I am a pro-PAS political activist and have been since 1977. And since 1995 I have been an internet writer (now called a blogger). So why should I be neutral? Hishamuddin Rais, the political activist, is not neutral. Chun Wai is not neutral. But Raja Petra Kamarudin must be neutral, is it?

Anyway, today, Chun Wai wrote:

It was a marriage doomed from the start (Umno-PAS marriage). Correction: PAS was married to Barisan Nasional for five years from 1974 and with Barisan Alternatif (which included PKR and DAP) from 1999 till 2004. PAS is a serial divorcee with a bad record of staying in a marriage.

To put it crudely, PAS slept with practically everyone including those it had branded “kafir” (infidels) and this even included Umno at one point. But now, Hadi apparently has amnesia, and is proclaiming Umno a brother. His argument is that a marriage (with Umno) will be incestuous, though flirting is permitted.

Kelantan’s ‘May 13’ was in 1977

First of all, PAS joined Barisan Nasional in 1973, not 1974. Then, in 1977 (four and not five years later), PAS was sacked from Barisan Nasional due to the Kelantan Crisis that saw riots on the streets and cars and buildings being burned.

This Kelantan Crisis (also called the Kelantan Emergency) was regarding the very unpopular PAS Menteri Besar, Muhamed Nasir, who refused to step down after a vote of no confidence was passed against him in the Kelantan State Assembly.

Because of that PAS and Umno became ‘enemies’, and PAS lost the state in the March 1978 state elections that were held four months before the general election (GE5) in July 1978. Yes, how many people know that in 1978 the Kelantan state election was held in March while the general election was held in July due to the collapsed state government?

Muhamed Nasir was ousted in the Kelantan State Assembly via a vote of no confidence but refused to step down

Now, the reason all this happened (the vote of no confidence against the Menteri Besar, the collapse of the Kelantan State Government, the early state election four months ahead of GE5, etc.) was due to an internal conflict in PAS that saw the party split into two. The ousted Menteri Besar, Muhamed Nasir, went on to form a new PAS-splinter party called Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia or BERJASA, which most Malaysians, in particular Chinese, have probably never heard of.

Hence Chun Wai has not painted a very accurate picture of the “PAS leave Barisan Nasional” story. And PAS did not leave but was kicked out because of the chaos in Kelantan. The older generation probably remembers the curfew, the soldiers on the streets, the burning of cars and buildings, Chinese leaving the state and running away to a safer place, etc.

The Kelantan Emergency of 1977

Kelantan did not have a ‘May 13’ like in the West Coast but they did have the 1977 Emergency although it was not Malays versus Chinese but Malays versus Malays. Nevertheless, many Chinese cars and buildings still got torched (so be careful about instigating Malays to fight Malays).

Chun Wai also said, “PAS slept with practically everyone.”

Yes, PAS did join Barisan Nasional in 1973 after the then Prime Minister Tun Razak Hussein invited ALL political parties in Malaysia to join the new coalition formed in 1973 in the aftermath of ‘May 13’ — for the sake of national solidarity and with the purpose of avoiding another ‘May 13’ or ‘May 13 version 2.0’.

PAS had noble and sincere reasons for joining Barisan Nasional — to avoid further race riots. But it was Umno that kicked PAS out of Barisan Nasional four years later due to the Kelantan Crisis or Kelantan Emergency. All PAS wanted was for the Menteri Besar, Muhamed Nasir, to resign since a vote of no confidence had been passed against him in the State Assembly.

Nik Aziz said if PAS and Umno can share the same Islamic agenda then they can share the same bed

That was what Nik Aziz said, a man who Lim Kit Siang and DAP say is a great leader and who commands great respect from the Chinese. Yes, PAS exists for only ONE reason and if Umno can share that same reason then PAS and Umno can share the same bed. Itu apa yang Nik Aziz cakap. Itu bukan saya cakap.

It was DAP and not PAS (as Chun Wai said) that left Barisan Alternatif in 2001 and it was DAP that kicked PAS out of Pakatan Rakyat (and not PAS that left, as Chun Wai said)
