We’ll stand by you, PAS tells Umno

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan says the opposition will play its check-and-balance role.

(FMT) – PAS today vowed to stand by Umno, in yet another show of solidarity between the two largest Malay-Muslim parties in the country.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan must be given a chance to come up with strategies and chart a new direction for the party, which has suffered a spate of defections since its historic defeat in May.

“PAS will continue to be with other opposition parties in the context of solidarity and providing checks and balances to the Pakatan Harapan government.

“We will give advice so the government will act in the best interests of the rakyat,” Takiyuddin said.

Takiyuddin said his party would also cooperate with the government and Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to ensure peace and prosperity.

Umno, which won 54 federal seats in the May 9 general election, is now left with 37 MPs.

PAS has 18 MPs in Parliament and 90 state seats.
