Pakatan Harapan’s house of cards

It was all just a house of cards. Pakatan Harapan’s 20 years of lies was revealed when they were allowed to form the government. They could not deliver what for over 20 years they claimed they were going to do. Then, when they lost the government due to an internal power struggle, they continued with these lies by alleging that Muhyiddin is a backdoor PM and that the government is illegal/unconstitutional.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin

For 20 years from 1998 to 2018, the opposition — first Barisan Alternatif, followed by Pakatan Rakyat, and then Pakatan Harapan — kept telling Malaysians how the country should be run and what they will do if or when they come to power.

It was an elaborate plan built around impressive and wonderful sounding slogans. Accountability. Transparency. Competency. Good governance. Independence of the judiciary. Zero corruption, abuse of power, cronyism and nepotism. Justice. Democracy. Separation of powers.

Those and more were the catchwords and catchphrases that were bandied about for 20 years. Later, “Zero GST” was added to that list of how Malaysia was going to be turned into a Shangri-La, the land of milk and honey with roads paved in gold.

How can Anwar be the solution when he is the problem?

Finally, the opposition was given the chance to run the country. On 9th May 2018, 37% of the registered voters or 5.5 million voters (or 45% of registered voters who turned out to vote) gave Pakatan Harapan the government.

The balance 6.5 million voters did not vote for Pakatan Harapan, though. Hence, in essence, 55% of the registered voters who turned out to vote (or 63% of the total registered voters) were not with Pakatan Harapan.

However, Pakatan Harapan’s 5.5 million votes or 45% was in one block (DAP, PKR, PPBM and Amanah) while the balance 6.5 million or 55% was splintered. And that allowed Pakatan Harapan to form the government even with only 45% of the popular votes.

But when PPBM and some MPs from PKR abandoned Pakatan Harapan, they lost their majority in Parliament. But this was still not enough to bring down the government because Pakatan Harapan could still have ruled as a minority government.

Mahathir resigned and then blocked the Agong from appointing Dr Wan Azizah as the new PM

What brought down the government was the fact that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad resigned as Prime Minister (and he refused to withdraw his resignation when urged to do so by Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong), and when the Agong wanted to appoint Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to take over, Mahathir disagreed.

This left Malaysia without a Prime Minister. The Agong then summoned the 222 Members of Parliament to the Palace (220 MPs went) and when asked, one-by-one, who they wanted as PM, more than 50% named Muhyiddin Yassin.

Convinced that Muhyiddin commanded the confidence of the majority Members of the House, the Agong swore Muhyiddin in as PM8 on 1st March 2020, as provided for in the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.

These events have now been confirmed by previous Attorney-General Tommy Thomas in his latest revelation.

Anwar is a conman and his 20 years propaganda about the so-called “Agenda Reformasi” is just a house of cards

In short, by his selfish actions and political missteps, Mahathir practically gave the government to Muhyiddin Yassin and Perikatan Nasional. Muhyiddin is not a backdoor Prime Minister and neither is Perikatan Nasional an illegal or unconstitutional government, as what Pakatan Harapan alleges.

The claim that Pakatan Harapan received the mandate of the voters is a fallacy and a myth. Pakatan Harapan may have won more seats in Parliament — 113 versus 109 — but it did not really receive the mandate, as they claim. Just 45% of the votes is not really a mandate in the real sense of the word.

And even if 113 seats versus 109 can be translated into a “mandate”, this mandate was lost when Mahathir and his entire government resigned and PPBM plus some PKR MPs abandoned Pakatan Harapan and joined Perikatan Nasional.

But what is more crucial than debating the issue of mandate, backdoor Prime Minister, illegal or unconstitutional government, etc., is Pakatan Harapan’s delivery and performance when they were in power for 22 months.

What happened to Pakatan Harapan’s elaborate plan built around those impressive and wonderful sounding slogans? — Accountability. Transparency. Competency. Good governance. Independence of the judiciary. Zero corruption, abuse of power, cronyism and nepotism. Justice. Democracy. Separation of powers.

Lim Kit Siang and DAP have been lying to Malaysians for 56 years

Nothing happened. Pakatan Harapan was not able to deliver a single promise from their so-called “Reform Agenda” or “Agenda Reformasi”. Mahathir even admitted that it was impossible to deliver any of those promises as they were made thinking that Pakatan Harapan was never going to win the general election.

It was all just a house of cards. Pakatan Harapan had been taking Malaysians for a ride for 20 years. And after Mahathir collapsed the government, they continued to take Malaysians for a ride by claiming that Muhyiddin is a backdoor Prime Minister and that the Perikatan Nasional government is an illegal or unconstitutional government.

And Pakatan Harapan’s so-called mandate of the rakyat was not really a mandate. It was just 45% of the votes and 113 seats versus 109 seats. And even if they wish to claim it was a mandate, that mandate was lost when Mahathir resigned and blocked the Agong from appointing Dr Wan Azizah, and then PPBM and some PKR MPs abandoned Pakatan Harapan.
