Dr M: Repeal NSC and gangsters will run wild

(The Star) – Gangsters and criminals will be free to do whatever they want if the National Security Council (NSC) Act 2016 is repealed, says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“As a democratic nation, we the government have to listen to the people. There is worry that if we repeal the NSC (Act), the gangsters and criminals will be free to do what they like,” said Dr Mahathir.

He was commenting on a written statement by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Hanipa Maidin in Parliament, that stated that the NSC will be amended, not repealed.

On Monday (Nov 19), the Pakatan Harapan government said that the controversial law would be amended, despite an electoral campaign promise to abolish it.

The NSC Act was listed in its manifesto as a “tyrannical” act enacted by the previous Barisan Nasional administration.

“The government has studied the NSC Act thoroughly, and decided that it will only be amended and not abolished,” said Hanipa in his reply.
