Guan Eng: Mahathir would have been in prison if BN won GE14

(The Sun Daily) – Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would have been put behind bars if Pakatan Harapan (PH) had lost in the 14th General Election (GE14).

Speaking to over 3,000 people attending a PH mega ceramah for the Port Dickson by-election last night, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said Mahathir had told him prior to the May 9 polls that he was even prepared to face such a sentence.

The DAP secretary-general pointed out how Mahathir, who was in the centre of attention of a probe on the the foreign exchange dealings losses in the 1990s, was almost imprisoned by the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration.

“Not only (Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim has been in prison, I was too,” Lim said. “And the one who almost made it to jail was Mahathir. If we (PH) had lost the GE14, I think Tun would also be incarcerated.

“Tun has told me he was ready. And can we forget (Tun Dr) Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali was also once questioned by the police. If the other side had won, we would all have been in prison,” he said, here, drawing laughter from the crowd.

But thankfully, it ensured that the power was returned to the people (and PH), he added.

While Lim did not specifically mentioned a case, he was most likely referring to the losses on foreign currency transactions by the Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) in the 1990s, when Mahathir was the prime minister then.

Mahathir had said he was willing to be investigated, while the police had also set up a special team to investigate the matter last Dec.

Hasmah was, meanwhile, questioned by the police in Jan this year over her speech at a women’s rally last Sept.
