Pas thanks Dr M for returning oil royalty to Terengganu, Kelantan

(NST) – Pas has thanked Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the federal government for agreeing to grant oil royalties to Kelantan and Terengganu.

Party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said the “positive” move would cultivate the spirit of federalism, which he said was weak under the previous administration.

“Hopefully, there will be more avenues for the state government to receive funding for development, infrastructure and investment opportunities regardless of our political differences.

“We also to be open-minded about amending the Federal Constitution and laws left behind by our colonisers to strengthen the position of Islam.

“There is also need for a comprehensive agenda to elevate the rights of the Bumiputera and the national language, besides strengthening the administrative system and upholding social justice.”

Abdul Hadi said this in his policy speech during the launch of Pas’ 64th Muktamar (general assembly) at the Terengganu Indoor Stadium Sports Complex here today.

He also said Pas will not abandon its agenda to include Syariah law as part of the country’s constitutional democracy framework.

He said Pas will look into expanding the role of the Syariah courts to become the core of Malaysia’s legal system.

Abdul Hadi said this was why Pas, in 2016, submitted a Private Member’s Bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 in Parliament.

“Now, it is up to the new government to state their stand on RUU 355 (private member’s bill).

“For Pas, the Kelantan and Terengganu state governments are always ready to discuss and cooperate with the federal government, as well as hold dialogues with target groups to better understand our agenda,” he added.
