Shut up if you don’t understand Syariah law, says Ibrahim Ali

(NST) – Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra) protem president Datuk Ibrahim Ali has slammed those who questioned the caning of a lesbian couple who had attempted to have same sex relations in Terengganu.

He said they should “shut up” and stop acting emotionally, because they did not have knowledge of Islamic law.

“Don’t respond to a situation like this emotionally if you know nothing about Syariah law. They said the caning is cruel but did we (Malays) question and make noise about the punishment for rape, LGBT and so on?

“Those who do not understand, or have no knowledge, please shut up,” he told a press conference here today.

On Monday, two women who pleaded guilty to attempting same-sex relations were given six strokes of the rotan in front of 100 people at the Kuala Terengganu Syariah High Court.

Some prominent individuals and activists have said that the punishment and public shaming was cruel.

On another issue, Ibrahim appealed to the Registry of Societies (RoS) to speed up the approval of Putra.

“I appeal to RoS to approve this party quickly. I am sure it will be approved soon since we are now under a new government,” he added.

On the proposal to abolish the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma), Ibrahim urged the government not to make its decision too hastily.

”Why don’t they focus on the rakyat’s issues such as the cost of living rather than talk so much about abolishing this act and other acts that are related to national security?

“I urge the government not to make the decision hastily. If they want to abolish the act, they should carry out a referendum first to see whether the majority of the people agree with it.

“The Malay rulers should also act proactively and be stern on this matter, to ensure that the country’s security is protected.”

The law was passed by the Barisan Nasional government. Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said that the Pakatan Harapan government would repeal the law. PH had pledged to abolish several draconian laws in its election manifesto.
