Dr M: Pakatan to name PM candidate tomorrow
The opposition coalition chairman says he will accept the position if nominated collectively by all four components, namely PKR, PPBM, DAP and Amanah
(Berita Daily) – Pakatan Harapan will reveal tomorrow its prime minister candidate, said the opposition coalition’s chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad today.
“Tomorrow is the 4th. We are having a meeting of Pakatan Harapan. Maybe if they want to they can mention it then or announce or not but tomorrow, we’ll know,” said the former prime minister at a press conference, when asked on PKR’s objections to him being named as the PM candidate.
The coalition in a retreat last month saw Amanah, Bersatu and DAP agreeing to name Mahathir as the prime minister if they form the next federal government. PKR, however, disagreed as it wanted its de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim as the premier.
Anwar is serving a five-year jail term for sodomy and is scheduled to be released by June this year. He will not be able to hold public office until 2023 unless he receives a royal pardon.
Mahathir also confirmed that he would adhere to the decision taken by the Pakatan Harapan component parties.
“I stand by the decision of all the four parties,” he said.
He claimed to be in the dark about PKR’s objections to his candidacy.
“I don’t know because they haven’t told me anything. I am 92 years old. This year I’ll be 93. Obviously, I won’t be whatever… prime minister or whatever until I am 100 years old.”
