Guan Eng congratulates Mahfuz on leaving PAS
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng proves what the Qur’an says about hati busuk orang kafir
(FMT) – DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today welcomed former PAS MP Mahfuz Omar to the “real opposition”, saying the latter left a political party that was only pretending to be opposition.
The Penang chief minister said Mahfuz made the right decision to leave PAS, adding that the Islamist party was “so lost in its cause, it was praised by Umno”.
Yesterday, Mahfuz, 60, announced he was leaving PAS after 34 years but added that he is yet to have made any plans on joining another party.
Lim said Mahfuz knew that by being part of a pseudo-opposition party which was PAS, it could not fight the “larger bad” that was Barisan Nasional (BN).
“PAS is no longer a real opposition party. They are only a pretend opposition party.
“Mahfuz longs for an opposition party that can settle national issues, such as 1MDB and Felda, in order to really fight BN.
“Hence, he is seeking a real opposition alliance. An alliance which would fight to get rid of BN that is ‘mungkar’, with a new government that is ‘makruf’,” Lim said in reference to a Quranic tenet that enjoins good (amar ma’ruf) and forbids wrong (nahi mungkar).
Mahfuz, who is seen as a maverick in PAS, said his wife and daughter would also be quitting the party soon. His son had quit the party last year.
Mahfuz said he was leaving to get more PAS members to support the Pakatan Harapan, part of his larger plans on speaking out against the Islamist party.
He said he decided to leave after failing to get PAS back on the right path by rejoining the Pakatan Harapan opposition pact.
Mahfuz first won the Pokok Sena parliamentary seat in the 1999 general election but lost to an Umno candidate in the 2004 polls. However, he recaptured the seat in 2008 and retained it in the last election in 2013.
